Company Foundation

NEUMAN & ESSER BRASIL was founded in 1997 under the name NEUMAN & ESSER América do Sul in Belo Horizonte. However, the company's origins date back to 1983, when Demag decided to relocate the construction of its reciprocating compressors from Germany to Brazil. NEUMAN & ESSER seized the opportunity and signed a contract with Demag in Vespasiano for the manufacture of NEA compressors for the V series and vertical series. Further contract extensions in subsequent years included the modernization of Demag engines and joint sales activities for both compressor brands in the USA. In 1997, Demag completely discontinued the manufacture of reciprocating compressors in Brazil and NEA GROUP took over a staff of experts from Demag.
Zum Anfang
As a consequence, NEUMAN & ESSER América do Sul was founded with nine employees under the leadership of Marcelo Veneroso as Managing Director for Sales and Plant Engineering, who had already been active during the cooperation between Demag and NEA GROUP. NEA América do Sul was quickly able to record successful orders, including the modernization of several Demag CO₂ compressors at the Urea plant for Petrobras. As a look at the past 25 years makes clear, NEA BRASIL represents, so to speak, the blueprint for the implementation of NEA’s current corporate strategy. Employees from the COMPRESSOR SOLUTIONS, SERVICE SOLUTIONS, PROCESS SOLUTIONS and ENERGY SOLUTIONS divisions work together at the site.

Growth and First Steps in Grinding and Classifying Technology

The first very successful years of the company gave the momentum for additional growth of the business. In 2007, with 54 employees, the company moved into a newly constructed building in the Olhos D'Água Industrial Park in Belo Horizonte. The 7,500 m² site initially housed an 800 m² office building and a 1,000 m² workshop for packing, assembly and minor repairs. At this location, engineering and processing could be combined under one roof to meet the constantly growing customer requirements quickly and efficiently. Petrobras, one of the company's most important customers, was also acquired during this period and retained as a permanent partner. The first joint project comprised eleven plants with the largest compressors ever built by a company in Brazil.

With further expanding the site in 2012, NEUMAN & ESSER responded to the economic growth in Brazil and took the first steps in grinding and classifying technology. The office building was expanded to 1,000 m² and the factory building now covered 1,450 m² to also accommodate a new test center for grinding and classifying. The experts for grinding and classifying systems (then NEA Sistemas de Moagem e Classificação), among others, then moved into the added second floor.

NEAC Compressor Service Ltda.

With the increasing population of NEA compressor systems in the South American market and the consequent growth of the company structure to service these compressors, it was decided in 2009 to spin off the aftermarket business from NEA América do Sul. The service company NEAC Compressor Service Ltda., founded in March 2009, was headed by Claudio Corrêa as Managing Director. The new NEAC in Brazil took over all services related to the after-market business such as service, technical support, repairs, training, and the supply of NEA compressors as well as OEM licenses including spare parts.
Zum Anfang
In addition to specialists who had already gained experience in the construction and modernization of Demag and NEA machines since 1984, a team of young engineers was hired. To ensure that all service processes get performed in accordance with NEA GROUP standards the new NEA-family members were partly trained at the headquarters in Germany. The workshop was also certified according to the requirements of the highest "Level C" by the headquarters.
Zum Anfang
"Aligned with NEA GROUP's vision, the experience and technical knowledge of the employees of NEUMAN & ESSER BRASIL raises the level of customer confidence and has proved to be an important differential in the market in these 25 years of the company's history."

Start of Process Solutions

NEUMAN & ESSER had already been present with milling technology in South America since the 1950s. The first pendulum mill was installed in Argentina in 1952 and the second in Brazil in 1954. Then, as of January 1, 2012, NEUMAN & ESSER Sistemas de Moagem e Classificação Ltda. became operational and the sales and plant engineering of grinding and classifying systems in South America and Mexico were institutionalized. With the Managing Director Marc Giersemehl and four other experts in grinding and classifying technology, the new company set out to exploit the huge potential of the Latin American milling and classifying market. The portfolio included the pendulum mill (PM), the impact classifier mill (ICM) as well as cyclone classifiers (CSF), offline classifiers (SF) and cyclone cartridge filters (PCW).
Zum Anfang
In addition, existing grinding systems in Brazil, such as ball mills, were also retrofitted with the SF offline classifier to increase throughput rates and fineness of material. NEA GROUP supplied wear parts and service for grinding systems of all manufacturers from Belo Horizonte to operators in Latin America. The first test center for grinding systems outside Germany was also implemented in Belo Horizonte. In it, a complete PM00 system with cyclone separator and product filter, including a hot gas generator for simultaneous drying, as well as comprehensive measurement and control technology were installed. As a result, tests for coarse and fine grinding could now be carried out in Brazil, thus avoiding time and logistical expenses, and increasing customer confidence through proximity. The Test Center was inaugurated during a Latin American Milling Day event attended by Alexander Peters in September 2012.

Delivery of Six Type 500 Compressors

Starting in April 2014, América do Sul, as NEA BRASIL was then known, was able to deliver six four-crank, 1,000 kN rod force type 500 machines for the new Petrobras plant in northeastern Brazil. The units, with three-stage, four-crank NEA reciprocating compressors, are designed to API 618, 5th edition and were installed in the new S-10 diesel desulfurization system (HDS) at the Brazilian oil giant's largest refinery. The construction of this HDS plant, led by a renowned Brazilian engineering company, took over four years and is one of Petrobras' most significant investments.
Zum Anfang
Each unit is driven by a 6 MW synchronous motor and consists of a variety of components that will make any engineering heartbeat faster: Pulsation dampeners, shell-and-tube coolers, a frame-mounted oil system according to API with stainless steel components, remote control panels, monitoring system, a hydraulically controlled flow regulator and much more were executed according to the order. All three diesel desulfurization plants are designed for a volume flow of up to 55,000 Nm³/h of hydrogen at a suction pressure of 20 bar(g) and a discharge pressure of 140 bar(g) each. The conception from the first stroke of the pen to the detail engineering was without exception the responsibility and implementation of NEA América do Sul.

In addition to checking the foundation and the arrangement of the compressors in relation to the plant components, the entire electrical installation also had to be checked thoroughly. Also, very demanding was the installation of the entire instrumentation, the fine-tuning of the computer-aided stepless volume flow control, and finally the exchange of the data of the control unit of each compressor with those of the HDS plant.

NEUMAN & ESSER BRASIL in Its Anniversary Year

25 years after its foundation, the site in Brazil is an excellent example of NEUMAN & ESSER's interdisciplinary approach. 78 employees offer the South American market a wide range of Compressor Solutions, Process Solutions and Energy Solutions. The competences in Brazil range from application, sales, engineering and production to assembly and services. The site is also home to the Sales & Application Center with the broadest SBU spectrum, a center of excellence for hydrogen generation and a Test Center for Process Solutions. Its sales territory covers all South American countries and parts of Middle America and the Caribbean. In the past quarter century, a considerable number of NEUMAN & ESSER units have been sold. Today, for example, there are 171 compressors, 37 grinding and classifying systems, two electrolysers and two reformers in operation. 438 running compressors and 37 grinding and classifying systems are serviced by NEA GROUP.
Zum Anfang
Some 10 years ago the neighbors land of the Belo Horizonte site was acquired and plans for extending the existing workshop were agreed and made. Due to the down swing of the South American economy in the years 2012 to 2018, we decided not to realize the investment plans. But today, the situation looks different and hence we decided to pull out the old plans and adapt them to the new objectives – especially in regard to the diversified product portfolio of NEA BRASIL. New products like electrolysers and steam reformers or the extended line of mills and classifiers as well as new compressor types, like diaphragm compressors, demand more space and a different set-up of the factory. All that was taken into account and the utilization of the neighbor’s land was optimized. In the year 2023 we are going to invest some 7 million EUR or 40 million BRL in order to serve the hydrogen and circular economy in South America. This Expansion will quadruple the workshop area in Brazil.
